Year 8 Textiles pupils were given the design brief  to make a product (a bag, puppet or t-shirt) from textiles that do not harm people or the environment (sustainable textiles) i.e. materials from organic or ethical sources or with logos and designs.  I am really pleased with the final design they have all developed. Well done!  Please see below a selection of some of the designs.

We were thrilled to hear from ex-pupil Jenny Carter-Smith with an update of what she is doing now.  Jenny left in 2015 and she has been very busy...

"Since school I went to Portsmouth College taking A levels in Maths, Further Maths and Geography. Since college I have been studying Business and Management at the University of Portsmouth, taking options in Procurement and Supply Chain Risk Management. I have enjoyed my course so far and the opportunities university has given me. Last year I went on a summer school in China, spending time in Beijing and Shanghai; which was an amazing experience. I am currently on my placement year at King’s College Alicante, as a teaching assistant. It is amazing looking out of my window to palm trees and walking down the road to the beach. I am really enjoying the job, working with the children individually, and leading different ability groups. I have taken trips to Torrevieja, Guadalest, Las Fuentes del Algar and Madrid; and plan to explore more areas as the year goes on. I am also learning Spanish at the school whilst being here. This experience so far is making me consider a future career in teaching abroad. I am excited for the rest of the year."

As previously report Springfield pupils are participating in a national UKMT Maths Challenge again this year. Years 9, 10, and 11 completed the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge on 1st February 2018; Year 7 and 8 completed the Junior Challenge in April. The UKMT is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of young people in mathematics. THE UKMT organises national mathematics competitions and other mathematical enrichment activities for 11-18 year olds. They were established in 1996 and during the last academic year over 650,000 pupils from 4,500 schools have taken part in the three individual challenges, the UK’s biggest national maths competitions. Each challenge leads into a follow-on Olympiad round. UKMT also run mentoring schemes and summer schools for high performing students as well as training the team of six to represent the UK in the International Mathematical Olympiad. We are delighted that so many of our Year 7 and 8 pupils achieved awards for the challenge. These award winners are listed below:

Well done to pupils for following the fire evacuation procedures so well when the fire alarm sounded just before school started this morning.  A smoke alarm was set off by a fault in an electrical device.  The fire brigade were able to give a very prompt 'all clear' such that the school day could start on time.
