We are today celebrating the superb achievements of our Year 11 students as they open their long-awaited GCSE and other qualification results.
This is the first cohort of students to have sat formal examinations since 2019 due to examinations in 2020 and 2021 having been cancelled nationally as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students faced considerable and on-going disruption to their key stage 4 programme of study, and showed real resilience and determination in keeping up to date with their studies; they are truly deserving of their success!
The school’s provisional results indicate a good performance by the year group as a whole, and some outstanding individual achievements. Notably, 78% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in an English GCSE and 68% of students achieved a grade 4 or above in the mathematics GCSE (grade 4 is the standard pass, approximately equivalent to the former grade C, and is the minimum entry requirement for the majority of A Level/Level 3 courses).
42% of students achieved a strong pass (grade 5 or above – approximately equivalent to the former grade B) in English and mathematics. 11% of students achieved the highest grades of 9/8 in Maths, and 13% of students achieved the highest grades of 9/8 in English. Well done to all of the students!
Other notable successes this year include students’ performance in science, with 100%, 99% and 99% of students achieving a grade 4 or above in chemistry, biology and physics respectively; of these students, 15 achieved a grade 9 in biology, 13 achieved a grade 9 in chemistry and 11 achieved a grade 9 in physics – outstanding! We were also pleased to note that 100% of the RS students achieved a grade 4 or above, and that 44% of the 102 students studying History achieved a grade 7 or above.
The coveted GCSE grade 9 is designed to be more difficult to achieve than the former A* grade. This year, overall, 110 grade 9 GCSEs across the subjects (7% of all grades) were achieved by Springfield’s students - an excellent achievement.
Headteacher, Sara Spivey, stated, “Our Year 11 students have demonstrated extraordinary grit and positivity during what has been a very challenging few years for everyone. It has been a pleasure to be able to see them once more today and to hand over their well-deserved GCSE grades. They should be very proud of all their accomplishments at Springfield. I’d like to thank the teachers and other staff who have supported the students throughout their school career; they have worked diligently to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and training, and we look forward to learning of their future successes. Well done to the whole Springfield team!”
The Government will be publishing 2022 key stage 4 performance data for schools and colleges for completeness and transparency in due course (having not done so in 2020 and 2021). However, this will be with the caveat that schools and individual students have been affected significantly and varyingly by the COVID-19 pandemic and so comparisons with previous years’ data and other schools’ performance are unreliable.
