We were thrilled to welcome Unloc back to Springfield again today (Friday, 9 January). Unloc experts visited us to run a 'Cash Kickstarters' bootcamp in the TCC for some of our Year 9 students.
Cash Kickstarters is an initiative by Post Office and Unloc. It is designed to help young people aged 13 to 18 build a better relationship with their money.
At the workshop today students gained valuable skills and knowledge which should enable them to feel confident about their money now and in the future. The bootcamp allowed students to develop attitudes and behaviours they need to become financially independent as well as learning how to make the most of their money.
The free three-hour workshop run by Unloc’s experts, were fun, interactive and packed with practical tips to help students take charge of their money. Below is a summary of what they covered:
Money Making Options
- Students were given a Mystery Money Making Box which contained 30 examples of alternative ways to make money, in groups students then discussed how they would make money and what aspects they would need to focus on including finance, marketing and operations.
- Planning for Success
- Students work in groups to create a free standing tower to support a melon. Groups planned a budget they were given to ‘buy’ resources from the facilitator to build their tower. They then reflected on the areas they needed to focus on to ensure that they were budgeting effectively. Groups were also given an average salary and they had to plan a monthly budget for it based on categories given by the facilitator.
- Finding Your Dream Job
- Students learned about the process of job hunting, what to add into the work experience section of a C.V. and enjoyed a speed networking activity
- Being Your Own Boss
- In groups students took part in an enterprise challenge when they got the opportunity to create a business to sell a product.
- By the end of the session, students felt inspired, full of new ideas and ready to take on their financial future. Thanks to The Post Office and Unloc!
