On Thursday, 18 December some of our Year 8 students enjoyed a special rewards trip to the SeaCity Museum in Southampton thanks to Diamond Adventures. The school won a competition run by Diamond Adventures who paid for travel to Southampton with Powells of Portsmouth and a full museum admission, guided tour and workshop.

Students enthusiastically engaged with this educational trip and developed a greater understanding of the tragedy of the RMS Titanic and its effect on Southampton in an expert-led tour of the museum’s Titanic exhibition. This was followed by an interactive workshop which included activities related to the most famous ship in history. The workshop was run by an expert facilitator who allowed students to discover incredible real-life Titanic tales before undertaking a range of exciting and engaging hands-on activities including scientific experiments, a puzzle quiz about Titanic facts and the chance to handle some marine objects.

After the tour and workshop students visited the museum’s Court Room to watch a film exploring the investigation that took place after the event and some of the vital processes that have been put in place to prevent something like this happening again. They also had fun in the interactive part of the museum where they steered a ship, operated a pressure lever, used maps to navigate and practised their morse code skills.

We were particularly impressed by some of the great questions asked by Year 8 students during the day and the knowledge they displayed on the topic of the Titanic and marine history.

This trip will be beneficial to the Year 8 students involved as they will be studying the Titanic during History lessons in the New Year.

Thank you to Ms Burden for entering the school into this competition - this was a great opportunity.
