Some of our Year 10 geographers recently took part in a workshop led by housing developer Taylor Wimpey, focusing on important themes of sustainability and climate change. The session offered students a valuable opportunity to see how the concepts studied in the classroom connect directly to real life decision making and the world of work. The team delivered an informative and engaging presentation that introduced students to the work of Taylor Wimpey, the wide variety of career pathways within the company, and the importance of sustainability in modern housing development. Working in groups, students were then challenged to design their own sustainable housing development for a real site currently being developed by the company. Drawing on both their prior knowledge and ideas from the session, they produced some impressive ideas. Proposals included dedicated eco-zones, community parks, and a range of sport and leisure facilities that made a creative and environmentally conscious use of green space. Each group presented their ideas to the rest of the class, giving pupils the chance to practise their pupil speaking skills. The session finished with a discussion about career options in the housing and environmental sector. Pupils reflected on why they chose geography at GCSE and considered future work experience opportunities. Overall, it was a brilliant experience highlighting the relevance of geography in today’s world and exciting future pathways it can lead to.
