On Wednesday, 19 November 2025, Year 11 students participated in a Finance and Budgeting Focus Day. During the event, they engaged in informative sessions offered by the University of Portsmouth, HMRC and Springfield teachers.
Representatives from HMRC provided insights into the concept of taxes, their purposes, the reasons for paying them, and their potential impact on adult earnings.
-
The University of Portsmouth session included discussions on topics related to student finance and budgeting, focusing on how these financial aspects function in further education.
-
Other sessions included understanding the differences between renting and mortgages, including how each option operates and budgeting for household expenses using real salaries from various professions.
The day concluded with a powerful docudrama that explored the challenges of zero-hours contracts and the potential consequences of falling into spiraling debt.
Thank you to HMRC and the University of Portsmouth for coming in to run these practical sessions. Focus days like this are so important as they allow students to gain a foundational understanding of financial concepts like budgeting, saving and investing, which will help them manage personal finances effectively. This will allow them to make informed financial decisions, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills; setting them on a path to financial success and stability.
