Year 9 Geographers have been studying the changing economic world. They have been looking at the causes and consequences of the development gap between wealthier and less well off countries. To finish the first half of the topic, Mrs Whitelock's class played the 'population jelly baby game'. Each student received their country's share of jelly baby people and then they worked through a set of 'chance' cards, real life circumstances that can help or hinder a country's development. Students noted the changing dynamics of their country based on the events they faced and then discussed the 'fairness' of this at the end before eating all of their people! Studying the changing economic world allows students to understand global inequalities, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and encourages empathy and global awareness through engaging activities and discussions.
