From 26 to 29 September, a group of thirty-three Year 10 and 11 geography students embarked on an extraordinary educational journey to Iceland, designed to enhance their GCSE geography studies.
Day 1: Arrival and Initial Exploration
Our adventure began early on Friday morning, enabling us to touch down at Keflavik Airport by lunchtime. Without delay, we delved into our first activities, visiting the Bridge Between Two Continents, Reykjanes Lighthouse, and the Gunnuhver Hot Springs. After a day of exploration, we arrived at our accommodation, where we had some time to settle in before enjoying our first meal. The evening was dedicated to tackling exam questions focused on plate tectonics.
Day 2: Geothermal Wonders and Natural Beauty
The second day launched with a refreshing dip in the Secret Lagoon's naturally heated geothermal pools, followed by the renowned Golden Circle Tour. This journey included the awe-inspiring Gulfoss Waterfall, the Geysir geothermal area, and Thingvellir National Park. We also squeezed in a visit to some local horses and an ice cream farm, savouring their fresh produce. The day concluded with more exam preparation and a chance to spot the Northern Lights.
Day 3: Geological Marvels and Glacier Adventure
Our final full day began at the Lava Centre, where we explored the geological forces that shaped Iceland over millennia. We then visited Skogafoss Waterfall, where we had the opportunity to walk behind the cascading waters, and Seljalandfoss, which we climbed above. The highlight for many was the exhilarating Solheimajokull Glacier Hike. Equipped with hard hats, ice picks, and crampons, we scaled the glacier, aware that it may vanish within the next 50 years. Our last evening was spent in Reykjavik, where our wonderful tour guide, Magnus, gave us a special night tour of the capital, showcasing the Cathedral, Rainbow Road, and impressive modern architecture.
Day 4: Departure
On the final day, we began our journey home with an early start, resulting in a quiet coach and plane ride. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the students for their enthusiasm and effort throughout the trip. We hope the knowledge and experiences gained will greatly benefit them in their upcoming GCSE exams this year and next.
