On Wednesday, 01 October, we welcomed Aarthee and Hannah from the Outreach team at Somerville College, University of Oxford. Year 10 students heard about the diverse range of careers that those studying a single subject at degree level can progress to. The talk also covered different ways in which universities can deliver teaching and how Oxford and Cambridge's tutorial and college system is different from other universities. Hannah and Aarthee "myth-busted" ideas about student finance and explained that, contrary to rumours, studying at Oxford or Cambridge can work out cheaper than other universities (as there is good provision of term time only accommodation and terms are short). Lastly, we heard about the wide range of societies available at university and what student life is like. Any Springfield students aspiring to apply to Oxford or Cambridge are advised to work towards their best possible outcome at GCSE, to discuss A Level (or equivalent) options with a careers adviser before making choices and to read widely around their chosen degree subject as much as possible.
