Exciting Start to the Science Club Year: Vinegar Rockets Explode into Action
The introductory session of this academic year's Science Club was nothing short of explosive as Year 7 and 8 students enthusiastically crafted ‘vinegar rockets’ on Tuesday, 16 September 2025. Under the guidance of Miss Bryant, students learned to create the rockets. This was done by placing bicarbonate of soda in a small parcel of paper, the parcel was then placed in plastic container which contained a small amount of vinegar - the lid was put on the container sealing in the bircarbonate of soda and vinegar. The containers were then turned upside down and students waited for the inevitable 'pop' as the lids shot off and launched the containers into the air.
The Science Behind the Experiment
Here is how it works: the reaction between vinegar (an acid) and bicarbonate of soda (a base) produces carbon dioxide gas. This gas accumulates in the container, creating pressure that eventually forces the lid off, launching the container skyward. It is a simple yet effective demonstration of chemical reactions and gas production.
Join the Fun
A reminder to Year 7 and 8 students that this engaging and hands-on club meets every Tuesday in room A13. Come along to explore the wonders of science, gain confidence in experimenting, and gain a passion for the subject during your time at Springfield. Enjoy the fun and learning opportunities!
