On Wednesday, 16 July the Year 8 Focus Day theme was personal health and safety. We were lucky enough to have had visitors from many sectors come to speak to students about how they can keep themselves and others safe.

  • The RNLI spoke about the importance of keeping safe at the beach, particularly with inflatables and how to recognise and call for help if someone is in trouble in the water.
  • Network Rail reminded pupils of the dangers of the railway and why level crossings should be used sensibly and with caution.
  • The British Red Cross ran a session on First Aid and how you can help if you are the first on scene at an accident.
  • Hampshire Fire and Rescue spoke about the risks involved with arson, both to the arsonist and to others. A fire can affect more people than you think.
  • Canine Partners spoke about how having a dog can really be a lifeline to some people, keeping them safe and helping them in their own homes and out and about.  Pupils learned that it is important not to disturb a working dog by petting them, unless the owner says that it is OK to do so. This should, of course, be the same for all dogs and their owners.

Educating Year 8 students about personal health and safety is crucial as they navigate their early teenage years. Engaging with organisations like the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Network Rail, British Red Cross, Hampshire Fire and Rescue, and Canine Partners can significantly enhance their understanding and preparedness. Learning from experts empowers students to act confidently in emergencies and every day life, enhancing their ability to help themselves and others and we hope that this Focus Day will encourage students to adopt safer practices in their daily lives.
