We have recently welcomed two new additions to the Child Development department. We are now lucky enough to have two 'smart babies' to help pupils understand how the challenges of being responsible for a newborn baby.  From September, those studying Child Development will be able to opt to take a 'smart baby' home for the weekend. The baby is programmed to have different needs including feeding, rocking and nappy change and may also cry in the night - as newborns do! At the end of the 48 hour session, pupils will receive a score depending on how well they have cared for the baby. It will show the number of times it cried, how well its needs were met and if it was neglected. There is also a quiz to complete and a budget planner to work through. The baby must be near the carer at all times (a carer tag must be worn when pupils are giving care to the baby).  This is a hospital-style wristband is for the pupil to wear for the weekend - so there can be no passing the baby over to somebody else to look after! I recently trialled one over a weekend at home and, although it was tough at times, it was also very rewarding!

This experience helps pupils learn about the emotional and physical demands of caring for an infant, allowing them to foster empathy and patience. Additionally, it provides insights into child development stages, helping them relate theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, ultimately enhancing their learning and preparing them for potential future roles as caregivers or parents.
