During their textiles lessons this term Year 8 pupils embarked on an exciting journey to create round needle felted penguins. The process began with students selecting soft, vibrant felt fibres in various shades of black, white, and orange, the traditional colors associated with penguins. Equipped with felting needles, they learned how to handle these tools safely and effectively, gaining a fundamental understanding of the felting technique. As they repeatedly poked the needles through the wool onto a polystyrene ball, the fibres began to intertwine and compact, gradually forming the body of the penguin. This meticulous process required concentration and patience, as students carefully shaped the wool into a rounded form, ensuring that each penguin had a consistent and smooth surface.  After crafting the main body, students then focused on adding key features to bring their penguins to life.

Learning the art of needle felting offers Year 8 students a multitude of benefits, making it a valuable addition to their creative education. Engaging in this craft enhances fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as students manipulate the wool fibres with precision. The repetitive motion of needle felting not only builds these physical skills but also reinforces patience - a crucial trait in both artistic endeavours and everyday life. As students shape their felt penguins, they practice focus and attention to detail, resulting in a tangible sense of achievement that boosts their confidence and self-esteem.
