Year 7 students in Modern Foreign Languages classes have been revisiting various topics covered throughout the academic year. One of the engaging themes they have explored is animals. For their revision of the animal names in French or German (depending on which subject they are studying), the students used an innovative approach involving Playdough.
During the exercise, a word and picture of an animal were displayed on the screen. The students were then tasked with creating a model of the animal using Playdough, with only two minutes allocated for each creation. This hands-on activity was aimed at reinforcing their memory of the German or French names through a tactile and visual method.
In addition to crafting models, students were also required to write a sentence in either German or French describing the animal. This dual-language exercise encouraged them to apply their vocabulary and sentence construction skills in a fun and interactive way.
To boost motivation, the best models and sentences earned students a raffle ticket. These tickets offered a chance to win a reward at the end of the term, adding an element of excitement and friendly competition to the learning process.
By combining creativity with language skills, this activity not only made revision enjoyable but also helped students better retain the vocabulary related to animals.
