CEMAST - the Centre for Excellence in Engineering, Manufacturing and Advanced Skills kindly hosted a group of Year 9 pupils on 25 June. We toured the college and looked at the learning spaces for automotive, manufacturing, robotics, mechanical engineering and maritime.
We then took part in a workshop run by three of the electronics staff. The session focused on the differences between digital and analogue systems and pupils were able to build and test circuits from both systems, including a functional night light that utilised LDRs and LEDs. All of our Year 9 pupils were able to complete the task and the staff were very impressed with the questions they asked throughout the session.
This trip was a valuable experience allowing the pupils to broaden their understanding of technology, providing them with foundational knowledge essential in today's tech-driven world. By learning how these systems operate, students can better comprehend the devices and systems they interact with daily. Moreover, the workshop encourages critical thinking by prompting pupils to analyse the functioning and applications of these systems across various fields.
CEMAST is one of the colleges available as a post-16 option for Springfield pupils. To get there, students take the train to Fareham Station (7-10 mins from Cosham) and then board a minibus shuttle to the campus at Lee-on-the-Solent. Minibuses also shuttle from Fareham College throughout the day. The college offers both post-16 and post-18 qualifications. |
