HMS Sultan, in Gosport, kindly put on a STEM focused day for a group of Year 7 pupils on 18  June. The event is run by the Royal Navy, supported by their partners such as Lockheed Martin, Eaton, Wartsila, BAE and Rolls Royce.

Throughout the day, pupils rotated through a range of activities, which (depending on group timetables) included drone flying, making yourself visible for rescue, rocket launching, foil boat construction, remote control submarines v boats, basic programming of a robot, electromagnetics and paper aeroplane design.

Ms Burden and Mr Peachment were delighted to receive many compliments about the behaviour and engagement of Springfield pupils throughout the day. Congratulations to Angelina R and Lexi D, who came second in the electromagnetics competition, and James H, who received a 'spot' prize for the submarines activity. The Springfield B group also programmed their Lego robot to complete the course in the fastest time!

This event was created to 'inspire the engineers of the future' and, as well as having fun whilst completing the challenges, pupils had many opportunities to chat to the officers and workers about their careers. This raised their awareness of options such as apprenticeships and degrees sponsored by companies.

Well done to the group for their brilliant conduct on a very hot day and their engagement with this inspiring event. We are very grateful to HMS Sultan and to all the companies involved for this opportunity.
