On Tuesday, 06 May, Year 7 and 8 students were treated to an exciting and educational experience as the BAE STEM Roadshow returned to Springfield. This year's event, focused on the theme of Artificial Intelligence (AI), aiming to inspire young minds and encourage them to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This educational initiative, generously funded by BAE Systems, the Royal Airforce and Royal Navy, is designed to promote STEM subjects among students, highlighting their importance and relevance in today's rapidly evolving technological landscape. The event's overarching goal is to motivate students to pursue STEM fields as potential career paths, addressing the future workforce needs in these critical areas.

Following last year's successful focus on electricity, this year's theme of AI captivated students and educators alike. The roadshow featured interactive demonstrations, a robot dog called Lexi, and engaging presentations that showcased the fascinating world of AI. Students learned about the basics of AI, its applications in various industries, and the ethical considerations surrounding its use.

The STEM Roadshow team brought with them a range of activities designed to spark curiosity and enthusiasm among students. Highlights included:

  • AI-Powered Robots: Students had the opportunity to interact with AI-powered robots, learning how they are programmed and the tasks they can perform.
  • Machine Learning Workshops: Interactive sessions introduced students to the concepts of machine learning, allowing them to experiment with simple algorithms and see AI in action.
  • Virtual Reality Experiences: Cutting-edge VR technology transported students into virtual worlds, demonstrating the potential future of AI in entertainment and education.

The sponsorship from BAE Systems, the Royal Airforce and Royal Navy underscores the importance of nurturing future talent in STEM fields. By investing in educational initiatives like the STEM Roadshow, their aim is to ensure a pipeline of skilled professionals ready to meet the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.

With AI at the forefront of technological advancements, the roadshow's focus this year has undoubtedly sparked new interests and aspirations among young people, paving the way for a brighter future in STEM.
