You may have noticed a new “Meta AI” button appearing in WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook over the last few days. This AI assistant is now embedded within these platforms, and it cannot be switched off.
While AI can offer benefits, many children, including those under 13, use WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, despite their age restrictions (WhatsApp: 13+, Instagram & Facebook: 13+ but 18+ for full AI features). This means they now have direct access to Meta AI.
What is Meta Artificial Intelligence (Meta AI)?
Meta AI is an assistant integrated into chats, providing instant responses and interactions. Unlike traditional AI models, Meta AI is not training on these conversations, but it still engages in generative AI-powered interactions.
Why is this a concern?
Under UK data protection laws, an adult with parental responsibility must provide consent for data processing if a child is under 13. While the Online Safety Act (OSA) does not specifically mention generative AI, it does apply to platforms that facilitate user-generated content, which includes many AI-driven tools. This raises concerns around data use, misinformation, and exposure to AI-generated content without appropriate safeguards.
‘Portsmouth: The Digital City’ Project have put together a useful Artificial Intelligence and Social Media booklet (linked below) which will gives more information and can be used to encourage a discussion with your child around AI, privacy, and responsible digital use.
