On 13 March, nine pupils from Years 7, 8 and 9 visited Fratton Park – not to play football, but to participate in the Portsmouth Literature Quiz, organised by the School Library Service!
They were competing against teams from other schools across the city, and in readiness for this all team members had to focus on reading the following four titles by popular authors who were present at the event, and also research the individual authors’ websites:
‘On Silver Tides’ by Sylvia Bishop
‘King Of Nothing’ by Nathanael Lessore
‘When Things Went Wild’ by Tom Mitchell
‘Echostar Is Always Listening’ by Melinda Salisbury
The Springfield teams were made up of 3 pupils, and they each gave a very creditable performance. Although Springfield were not the outright winners of the competition, two of the teams won rounds and were presented with book vouchers which they were able to exchange for a free book from the Hayling Island Bookshop, who were present to support the event.
The Literature Quiz is an enjoyable, inspirational event that celebrates reading for pleasure and motivates pupils about books. There are books to suit everyone’s taste available in Springfield Library, including the set titles listed above, so why not try reading them soon?
