On Tuesday, 25 and Wednesday, 26 February 2025,  Year 7 students embarked on an educational journey to the Mary Rose Museum located at the Historic Dockyard. This enriching experience included an informative guided tour, where students delved into the fascinating history of the Mary Rose ship, its crew, and the captivating artefacts recovered from the seabed.

Immersive Learning through 4D Cinema

A highlight of the visit was an immersive 4D cinema experience, which vividly illustrated the colossal excavation project that unfolded over several years to lift the Mary Rose from the depths of the Solent. This cinematic adventure provided students with a deeper understanding of the monumental efforts required to preserve this piece of history.

Scientific and Mathematical Exploration

The students also participated in a lively and educational workshop that combined historical enquiry with scientific experimentation. They explored various theories surrounding the sinking of the Mary Rose, using their scientific and mathematical skills to investigate potential causes. The workshop challenged students to consider if the ship's instability or overloading, possible design flaws, or other factors contributed to its demise. By creating and testing their own models, students were able to predict stability and either support or refute their hypotheses.

This field trip offered numerous benefits to the students, enhancing their ability to conduct historically valid enquiries and understand different types of historical and archaeological evidence. It also improved their skills in interpreting observations and data to draw meaningful conclusions. The visit to the Mary Rose Museum was not only informative but also inspired students to engage deeply with history through a blend of science and discovery.

We were proud to receive feedback from the Mary Rose Museum: 'The pupils were highly engaged throughout the visit and were an absolute credit to the school!'
