In GCSE Physical Education, planes and axes are important concepts to understand when studying human movement, especially in relation to physical activity and sports. Our Year 9 students were exploring how planes and axes work by using 3D figurines and jelly babies to understand the direction a body moves and how it rotates around an axis. Understanding these planes and axes helps pupils to analyse movements in sports and physical activities more precisely. Learning about planes and axes also allows students to develop a better awareness of their own bodies in space. This physical literacy is crucial for mastering various movements and techniques across different sports and physical activities. It allows improved coordination so students can recognise how the body moves along different planes and axes. As well as this, the awareness of movement mechanics can help in identifying and avoiding movements that may lead to injuries. Jelly Babies also act as a nice snack at the end of the lesson!
