Through the organisation of Speakers for Schools, which provides opportunities for state sector schools to hear from professionals, pupils in Years 8 and 10 had the chance to attend a live online session on careers in journalism. Professor Tim Luckhurst explained his career path from school through to working for a range of organisations, including the BBC. He spoke about the responsibility of journalists and of the opportunities and challenges of working abroad and in areas of conflict. Professor Luckhurst advised pupils to read newspapers, watch television programmes and to listen to current affairs on the radio. He explained that these sources of news offer a varied diet of topics and information, unlike news received just through social media. He answered questions sent in by students across the country at the end.
Speakers for Schools has a library of interesting careers talks and also offers virtual work experience and insight days. https://www. speakersforschools.org/
