My Year 8 Design and Technology class took part in a solar boat project which focused on renewable energy, specifically solar power in this instance. Students were tasked with designing a child's toy boat powered by solar energy. Students completed a range of research into solar powered products and how they work. They also looked at different types boat hulls. Students create a styrofoam model which was then vacuum formed, a corrugated plastic deck added along with a wooden cabin and finally the motor and solar panel were soldered together. Students tested the buoyancy and effectiveness of the motors and solar panels of their boats by taking them for a race around the school fish pond.
