On Friday, 14 June 2024 Year 7 took part in a Focus Day. The theme of the day was gambling (what it is, the dangers and how addictive it is) and anti-bullying (recognising bullying, responding to bullying and preventing bullying). Students were engaged in special sessions run by Gamcare, who provide information, advice and support for anyone affected by gambling harms. Gamcare presented an interactive workshop presenting facts about gambling. Students were informed about what gambling is, how they themselves might be gambling without realising it through, for example, buying packs of stickers to complete a sticker book, and what help and support is available for those who may be affected by gambling harms. Students also participated in anti-bullying sessions; they learnt what constitutes as bullying, the possible consequences of bullying, the legalities of ongoing bullying and where to seek help and support for those affected by bullying. Students then used their creative skills by designing colourful wristbands with anti-bullying slogans and posters for an anti-bullying campaign.
This was an informative day that touched on some serious issues which Year 7 students handled maturely. Students built on their resilience skills which should enable them to recognise risks, take measures to control their own behaviours and to recognise addicition and/or bullying in others so that support can be offered.
