On Thursday, 14 March the Springfield Year 9/10 Girls' Football Team took part in the Year 9 and 10 Portsmouth Cup Final against Priory School. The girls were definitely nervous for the game as we have not beat Priory School in this age category for a few years. Despite this, the girls started the game strongly and once they had settled they created a few chances in the first half but Priory had a strong back-line. Just before half-time Priory made a counter-attack and scored the first goal of the match. The girls did not let this phase them and came into the half-time talk with a positive attitude, they were ready to get straight back out there and clear the deficit. A quick chat from Miss Woolgar and Mrs White with some observations from the first half saw them bring the game back to 1-1 within the first 5 minutes of the second half. A pass from Sophie George (9L) was intercepted by Priory's CB but an error from the goalkeeper meant we then drew 1-1. This gave the girls a massive boost and enabled them to focus on the game and apply everything they have been working on to the game. A series of excellent passes gave Springfield lots of chances at scoring and this finally paid off with a composed finish from Sophie George (9L) on the left-wing. With 10 minutes to go we were 2-1 and after a quick formation change the girls were ready to defend and keep the ball in their half. A few more chances for both teams arose but the final whistle blew and Springfield won 2-1. The girls were absolutely elated and enjoyed lifting the cup for the first time. Well done to all the team and also to those who have played in previous matches to get us to the final!
